Mazzer Mini G Review: Accurate Grind-by-Weight, With Retention and Dosing Questions

Quick take

The Mazzer Mini G is a grind-by-weight espresso grinder: you place the portafilter and it grinds to a target weight rather than for a set time. Early reports back that promise on accuracy, workflow and build, and raise two questions: how much coffee it holds back between doses, and doses that sometimes stop short of the target.

Buying Verdict

Early signal

Based on 8 evidence snippets · 3 positive · 5 critical

Buy it if weighed dosing is the feature you are paying for. Settle the retention question first: if purging several grams a day, or accepting some of yesterday's grounds in the first shot, is a deal-breaker, look elsewhere. Expect the occasional short dose: three owners report grinds stopping a few grams early, one of them about once every 30 doses, and none reports a fix, so weigh shots until you know how your unit behaves.

Evidence confidence: Early signal. The page rating is capped at 8 retained evidence snippets. Editorial assessment: Eight rows across seven threads. Doses stopping short now rest on 3 independent threads and build quality on 4, so both reach the three-source bar; grind-by-weight accuracy rests on one owner's first day plus a commenter, and retention on two threads relaying the same kind of third-party test rather than an owner's measurement. The page remains an early signal.

Strengths and Common Complaints

Accurate grind-by-weight, an easy interface and build quality are what early reports praise.

A cited retention figure and doses stopping short for three owners are the open questions. • Total evidence snippets: 8 • Updated Oct 12, 2026

Strengths

  • Grind-by-weight that lands on target: On a first day of use, doses came within 0.02 g of target nearly every time, and shots pulled well.
  • Build and interface: Build quality is called amazing and the interface super easy to use by a new owner, and rated well above a scale-based setup by a commenter. Even a buyer who chose a different grinder loved Mazzer's build quality and European manufacture. Another owner finds the grounds super fluffy and the grinder built like a tank.

Common Complaints

  • Retention of roughly 9 to 11 g, from a published test: About 11 g of retention, from a published Kaffeemacher test, is called a bit bonkers by a commenter who still rates the grinder, and another buyer cites 9 to 10 g. Neither is an owner's own measurement.
  • Doses stopping short of target: Doses can stop short: two new owners saw doses stop a few grams short of 18 g, one after a change of beans with the scale reading jumping around, the other only at settings below 5, and a third owner has had grind-by-weight randomly stop at 3-6 g four or five times, about once every 30 doses. None reports a fix.

Who Should Buy Mazzer Mini G — and Who Should Avoid It

Fit comes down to automated dosing versus low retention.

Best For

  • You want automated weighed dosing above all else.
  • You value build quality and a simple interface.
  • You can purge or accept some retained coffee.

Not For

  • Low retention is your deciding factor.
  • You do not want to troubleshoot short doses.
  • You want a larger body of owner evidence first.

Complaint Retention wastes 9-10 g of coffee per dose 2026-08-29

Mahlkonig E64 WS I was on holiday last week and spent the entire 2 weeks agonising over the Mazzer Mini G vs the Mahlkonig. I badly wanted to buy the Mazzer as I loved their build quality and the made in Europe aspect. Finally at that price point, due to the high retention of the Mini, I decided that I could not justify compromising on either purging 9-10 g coffee ( circa 400 EUR/year) or drinking the first cup of the morning with half of it containing yesterday's coffee. So went for the Mahlkonig. I ordered it o

New to grinders, need help understanding is my new Grinder defective? [Mazzer Mini G] Hi all, ive been getting along with a new Mazzer Mini G I took delivery of a few days ago. Everything is going great but one thing I dont quite understand: The wheel adjustment came from out of the box at 5. Does this mean its "zero'd" at 5?? I'm honestly not even sure what zero'd means in terms of grinders. The problem im having is if I try to set the value to anything under 5, my grinder struggles to give me the full 18g weig

Mini G is a great grinder. However 11g of retention (see recent Kaffeemacher test) is a bit bonkers. Depends a bit on how you want to use it.

Complaint Grind-by-weight doses went wrong with new beans 2026-06-27

Grinding weight issues [Mazzer Mini G] Very recently got the Mazzer Mini G. Have just changed to a new bag of beans this morning, and now have been getting this issue in the video. It seems like when it grinds it is not weighing properly as before the scale would increase consistently, seems to jump around. And it stops a few grams short of my target (18g). Anyone experienced this before? When changing beans? I have been fiddling with the portafilter bracket to get it to sit correctly and grind centrally, but I

grind-by-weight lands within 0.02 g of target 2026-09-08

Mazzer mini g what a grinder ! Got my mini g yesterday after weeks of looking into to grind by weight grinders, I can't believe how accurate it's been literally with in 0.02 of the gram nearly every time. Built quality is amazing & the interface is super easy to use, I've been using the dosing cup straight into the portafilter with no wdt & the shots are pulling really well. My only gripe is it came with the larger hopper so looks a little out of place for now. Anyone on the fence about buying one I can't recom

Mini G, and it’s not even close. Much better coffee quality, build quality, and GBW workflow Pico with the scale works but from what I have experienced is not really seamless or enjoyable. Mini G you literally turn it on, place the portafilter, and it grinds the exact amount of coffee

Buying Questions About Mazzer Mini G

Quick answers to the main review, complaints, buyer-fit, and comparison questions shoppers ask before choosing Mazzer Mini G.

Why does my Mazzer Mini G stop short of the target dose?

No cause is confirmed. The owner whose doses changed with new beans was adjusting the portafilter bracket so the portafilter sits centrally; the one whose doses fell short below setting 5 was unsure whether the factory setting of 5 is its zero point. Asking the seller or Mazzer is the practical next step.

Mazzer Mini G or Mahlkonig E64 WS?

One buyer who loved the Mini G chose the E64 WS because of its retention: purging 9-10 g each morning would cost them around 400 euros a year, and not purging would mean half of the first cup is yesterday's coffee. That is a purchase decision, not a comparison of the two in use.

Do you need WDT with the Mazzer Mini G?

Not for one new owner, who doses from the cup straight into the portafilter without WDT and finds shots pulling really well. That is a first-day report.

Mazzer Mini G or a grinder with a separate scale?

A commenter who has used both prefers the Mini G by a wide margin for coffee quality, build and workflow: you turn it on, place the portafilter and it grinds the exact amount, whereas a grinder-plus-scale setup works but is not seamless.
