Quick take
The Baratza Encore is an entry-level electric burr coffee grinder for filter brewing, from V60 and Chemex to AeroPress, and owners keep them for a decade or more. The two exceptions worth knowing before you buy are espresso and very old units.
Widely recommended entry-level electric burr grinder aimed at filter brewing, with an ESP variant geared toward espresso.
Practical pick with a category-specific lean
Years of filter brewing, kept going with parts and support.
It does not reach espresso fineness, grind quality draws mixed reports and can drift, decade-old units can lose consistency, and newer replacement hopper gaskets wear out. • Total evidence snippets: 19 • Updated Oct 12, 2026

The Encore ESP is a different grinder, set up for espresso and single dosing, and its owners' reports are kept as separate evidence. One owner who loves their non-ESP Encore says they have no need for the single-dose attachment and uses it happily with an AeroPress.
A used Encore can be a sound buy if you plan to maintain it: one owner bought theirs used, re-burred it cheaply and rates Baratza's parts and support, and owners keep these grinders running for many years. Ask how old the unit is and what has been replaced, since the problems reported here come from units around a decade old. Nobody here describes an inspection checklist.
The ring burr holder is plastic, and its tabs are designed to fail first: one owner explains it is a purpose failure part that breaks before something more expensive does, and is cheap enough that they bought a whole ring burr and holder, which dropped right in. The symptom is easy to miss. In one case shots suddenly ran too fast at an unchanged setting because all three plastic tabs on the holder had broken, fixing the grind in place; a replacement from Baratza had the grinder working and shots pulling normally again. A thirteen-year-old unit was harder to dial in after its holder was replaced, without a confirmed cause.

I got Baratza Encore 5 years ago based on reviews. I use it daily since, 0 issues.
Baratza Encore. Thing is a beast. I've had this a few years now and would not use anything else. Perfect and consistent grinds.
Just ordered an Opus 2, how has yours held up? I've followed Fellow products for years but the Opus 2 is the first one I've purchased. It's arriving Wednesday and I'm curious to hear from people who have actually been using one for a while. I've had a Baratza Encore for about 12 years and it still works great. I use it almost daily for V60, and I also have a KINGrinder K6 that I use for both filter and espresso. I've been wanting something faster for espresso, though, which is what finally pushed me toward the Op
Previously I had the Baratza Encore and just left it at 20. Very rarely did I change the grind setting but I felt like I consistently had really good coffee.
Opus 2 vs Baratza Virtuoso+ Hi everyone I have the chance to get either one of these for £170 new. I'm usually using a kalita wave or a v60, I'm nervous that the opus is more of an aesthetic than an actually reliable grinder. I used an encore for 5+ years and was fine with it but this seems like a nice chance to get something a bit more versatile in the event that I get into other brew methods (normal filter and I'd like to try siphon, espresso seems very difficult to me) Are there any particular reasons why I s
[r/espresso] The ring burr holder is a purpose failure part so it breaks before something more expensive does. They are relatively cheap to replace. When I replaced mine on my original Encore I just bought a whole ring burr and holder because it was cheap enough and just dropped right in.
Baratza Encore Non-ESP (used) - Really liked the simplicity/robustness of it and worth the price, although I know it's not ideal for espresso (macro adjustments, ground inconsistency, etc.)
I love my Baratza Encore non ESP. No need for single use attachment. Works great with my Aeropress. I found mine used and upgraded the burrs on them for cheap. Support and parts are great from Baratza.
Espresso range and grind consistency draw most of the critical threads; no cause is confirmed for the old units' problems.
I'm currently using my old Baratza Encore … My current issue is that I find a good setting and get okay espresso for a week, and then the grind size randomly becomes too fine, despite being on the same setting.
I was wondering if anyone has found a source for original-style encore hopper gaskets. The new replacement ones from baratza dont seem to hold up for long.
I have a Baratza encore grinder. I moved away from this while optimising pour over and french press because there was too much fines and sludge.
Another "help me pick a grinder" post, but with some detail. The time has come to get a new grinder. I've been using a Baratza Encore for nearly the last decade, and the last 2-ish years with the M2 burrs. I've been having more and more issue with grind consistency and not sure if the burrs are just mis-aligned or what. Either way, I'm looking for a new grinder. I brew with many different brewers, but my go-to is a V60 and very, very rarely buy anything other than light roasts and prefer a more bright and fruit-fo
upgrade from my Baratza Encore which cannot do espresso at all and does filter okay.
Picture is of the finished bed of a Perc M-03 ground at setting 13 on my Baratza Encore. Im seeing really big pieces that are more indicative of a 30+ grind setting than 13.
Help me with an equipment decision my current setup is a baratza encore grinder (standard burrs), 8 c chemex, scale, and electric gooseneck kettle. I love and have always loved (30 years now) the flavor from chemex. for me chemex is non negotiable. i have a few issues I'm trying to resolve. * the grinder has not performed well since replacing the burr holder a few months back. not broken, but it's been hard to dial in. it's old-13+ years. to resolve this without dropping a ton of cash I just ordered the M2 burr r
what is your favorite budget friendly espresso grinder [$600 or less]? I have a gaggia classic pro and i love it. when i first got it, i got a cheap grinder (baratza encore). i got it because at the time i thought it would good to get an multi-use coffee grinder. it could grind my beans for a drip coffee, cold brew, and espresso. well i dont like it that much for espresso. it doesnt get fine or course enough. its hard to dial espresso in ( i primarily use a lighter roast). ive tried everything to make it work, but
Baratza Encore question I love my Encore, but when I put the coffee bin back in the grinder after emptying it into my Aeropress, coffee grounds get ejected out the front and I have to clean the counter every time. Just an annoyance; has anyone found a solution? Baratza Encore Baratza Encore
Shots suddenly running too fast with the same grind setting [Bambino Plus, Baratza Encore] Update: The issue turned out to be a broken Baratza Encore ring burr holder, resulting in a fixed grind setting and no adjustment possible. I purchased a replacement from Baratza and the grinder is back to working, and shots pulling as expected! Thanks to those that suggested this issue - all three plastic tabs were broken on the burr holder. Edit: this is not a "grind finer" issue, since it was working at this setting for
I just upgraded from Baratza Encore to Fellow Opus 2. Opus 2 is a significant step up in every way, including the quality of the coffee produced from the grinds. For the first time in my life, I’m tasting the notes that roasters provide with their coffees. Definitely worth $200, although ship times are longer for the base model. I bought $250 model with metal adjustment knob and wood lid so it would arrive sooner.

That is what its owners use it for: near-daily V60 for twelve years, Kalita Wave and V60 for five-plus, a Chemex for one long-term owner, and an AeroPress for another who calls it great with it.
Yes. One owner bought theirs used and upgraded the burrs cheaply; another has run M2 burrs for about two years, and a third ordered M2 burrs to revive a thirteen-year-old unit rather than replace it.
That is how one twelve-year owner works: the Encore for V60, a KINGrinder K6 for both filter and espresso, and an Opus 2 on order because they wanted something faster for espresso.
Owners split. One with a thirteen-year-old unit ordered M2 burrs rather than spend a lot; another, after nearly a decade and two years on M2 burrs, decided it was time for a new grinder for light-roast V60.
One owner who upgraded from an Encore to an Opus 2 called it a significant step up in every way, including the coffee from the grinds, tasting roasters' notes for the first time; worth $200 in their view. That is a single comparison. Two long-term Encore owners, at five-plus and twelve years, were themselves looking at the Opus 2, one unsure whether it is as reliable as it looks.
Good enough for many filter brewers, though not all of them. An owner of a few years calls it a beast with perfect grinds, long-term owners use it daily for V60 and Chemex, and one left it at a single setting for years of good coffee. Others moved away from it for pour-over and French press because of fines and sludge, or saw chunks far coarser than the dial setting. It does not go fine enough for light-roast espresso, and grind quality can slip on units around a decade old.
