Best For
- You grind mainly for espresso and want speed.
- You want grind-by-weight (on the 270Wi).
- You can grind when nobody is asleep or nearby.
Quick take
The Baratza Sette 270 is a compact, fast espresso grinder, and owners are mostly happy with what it puts in the cup, two of them for about five years. Nearly every report also says it is very loud, and noise is the main reason owners shop for a quieter coffee grinder. The other catch is durability: a gearbox one owner calls the grinder's weak spot, burrs that broke, and repairs that can cost more than a new one.
Electric conical burr grinder built for espresso, with macro and micro adjustment and grinding straight into the portafilter.
Buyer-facing pick with a clearer everyday fit
Owners like its speed, low retention and espresso results, and the 270Wi weighs doses.
Noise above all, then gearbox, burr and adjustment failures that can be costly to repair. • Total evidence snippets: 19 • Updated Oct 12, 2026

Satisfied espresso use spans four threads; the cup comparison with a Niche Zero is one owner's.
My Sette 270 has been great, but damn is it loud.
Opus 2 from Sette 270? Anyone have experience with both grinders? Would this be a downgrade? I've had my Sette for about 5 years and been happy with the results. It's just SO loud. From what I've read/seen it seems the Opus 2 performs above its price point but haven't seen any direct comparisons between the two. For context I single dose, but also use drip during the week so dual purpose is also appealing. TIA! Sette 270 Opus 2 Sette 270 Opus 2
[r/espresso] I have about 5 years on my sette 270 and I still love it. The short grind time, step less no slip adjustments and near zero retention makes for a very pleasant low fuss workflow. It’s also one of the easiest grinders to take apart and clean, requiring no tools. I bet most people in here who love saying it’s noisy, have never actually used or even heard it
New grinder (grind by weight, EU) [500-1500 Euros] Currently running a Baratza Sette W 270i which is a good grinder - compact, grind by weight, fast. But it‘s also noisy as hell and has a tendency to suddenly change the grind settings requiring readjustment. So I‘m looking for a new grinder. My machine is a Lelit Bianca, and I like to drink dark chocolate type roasts, not really a capuccino guy. I usually grind 18 grams to pull a double shot. I really don‘t have a budget but a Mahlkönig is
Noise comes up in nearly every thread; mechanical failures form a second group; the rest are single reports.
my current setup consists of a Profitec Pro 700 paired with a Baratza Sette 270. Despite home roasting, carefully weighing doses in and out, doing thorough WDT puck prep, and routinely cleaning the E61 group head and gasket, I am still plagued by frequent channeling.
Grinder upgrade [$3000] I've been in the "home barista" world of espresso making since Jan-2026. Not long, for sure, but long enough to know the Baratza Sette 270wi, although competent, just isn't cutting it for me anymore. My main complaint is the sheer volume while grinding, and I feel serious enough about the coffee game that I need to take a significant step up as far as my grinder goes. Any recommendations? I use medium roast beans 99.999% of the time and I prefer using the same bean and
My Sette 270 has been great, but damn is it loud. I knew it was loud when I bought it, and honestly it never really bothered me. But recently I realised how ridiculous it is when friends come over - every time I grind coffee, the whole conversation just stops 😂 Then recently my wife was making coffee while I was in the bedroom and I could hear the grinder going from there. That got me thinking… maybe it's time for a change. Looking for recommendations for a quieter grinder, ideally: \\- Mainly for espresso \\-

I have owned all three, at some point or another. > Baratza Sette 270 of two years old...Yes I'm aware of the amount of noise it produces, yet my head is like can it really be that bad? Yes. Yes it is. While I really like the Etzinger burr and the design *intent*, Baratza's implementation is a janky, all-plastic affair. Support was excellent (at least before the Sage/Breville acquisition), but still. A pity. When it worked, it was great. Much better in cup than the Niche Zero. But so loud. > A new AVX CG305
Looking for a grinder upgrade [$400-$650] So I mainly use the baratza sette 270 along with a 1zpresso hand grinder whenever I make pour over or want to make espresso without waking up half the neighborhood. And they both work ok, but I'm looking for an electric grinder in the $400-650 price range that can do both espresso and pour over grinding without being too loud. From my experience with the sette, it works, but grinding course still leaves this powdery overlay to the grinds, and I have to set it to like 3a-c
Baratza Sette 270 support Anyone else here have trouble with Baratza support? I have a Sette 270 grinder that stopped working. When I call their support line, I get a message saying that their phone support is turned off at the time and use email to log a ticket. I logged a ticket via their email support two weeks ago and have received one single response with troubleshooting advice. Took that advice, found the problem and responded the same day. Have not received a response back in a week. Baratza Sette 270 Ba
Upgrading from Sette 270w [$1,000] I’m currently brewing with a Profitec Move, and grinding with a Baratza Sette 270w. I love this grinder - it’s so fast and has virtually no retention. But it has three problems that I’d like to address: 1. One of us drinks only decaf, and the other caf. So we don’t use the bean hopper and treat it like a single dose machine. I’d like to just get a single dose grinder. 2. It’s incredibly loud. Fast, but loud. 3. The grind setting wheels are touchy and don’t always make sense.
I have this beauty for my Gaggia Classic. The thing is whatever the coffee beans I buy I basically never move out of the settings I show on the picture. Meaning, I'm always on the verge of the max finest setting the machine gives to me.
Definitely a broken gear box. THE weak spot of this grinder. … Unfortunately, it's due to a mechanical design flaw, and the replacement gear box are no better. Because of the other weaknesses this grinder has, I replaced it with an Eureka Specialita, and never looked back.
High pitch noise and no output [Baratza sette 270] Baratza Sette started making a high pitch grinding sound with no output. I took apart the burrs to see if something was stuck in there and the issue persisted. I would appreciate some insight on what may be wrong. Thank you! Baratza sette 270 Baratza Sette 270
I really liked my 270. Fast af, but it is LOUD. If you are ok with a jet engine going off for 4-6 sec, then you'll be good. I was not.
But as soon as the burr is inserted into the assembly, the assembly won’t rotate anymore and therefore of no use to adjust coarseness (second part of video). … I have had a replacement assembly from Baratza which hasn’t helped.

I've been running the Baratza Sette 270 for a few years now and despite the jet-engine volume i've loved it. Recently the burrs broke and I sent it for repair. After a couple weeks Baratza got back to me and said the cost of repair and parts would exceed a cost of a new one.

Products frequently compared alongside Baratza Sette 270:
One Opus 2 owner who came from a Sette 270Wi preferred the Opus 2 and found it quieter
A quiet, low-RPM single-dose grinder; one Sette owner still rated the Sette's cup higher
Quick answers to the main review, complaints, buyer-fit, and comparison questions shoppers ask before choosing Baratza Sette 270.
In the cup, one owner of both rated it well above the Niche Zero when it worked, crediting the Etzinger burr. The same owner found it so loud and so plasticky that they moved on. That is one owner's comparison.
Not ideally. One owner finds coarse settings leave a powdery overlay on the grounds and uses a hand grinder for pour-over instead; a five-year owner who also brews drip is looking at the Fellow Opus 2 partly because it is dual-purpose.
Reports differ by period. A long-term owner found support excellent, at least before the Sage/Breville acquisition. More recently, an owner whose grinder stopped working found phone support switched off and waited a week for an email reply after one troubleshooting message, and another was told a burr repair would cost more than a new grinder.
The Wi adds grind-by-weight, which one owner pairing it with a Lelit Bianca values for 18 g doubles; that same owner is also the one whose grind setting shifts on its own. No row compares the two versions directly.
