Breville Barista Pro Reviews: The First Machine Owners Keep for Years, and the Grinder They Outgrow

Quick take

The Breville Barista Pro is an espresso machine with a built-in grinder that owners describe as a first machine they keep for years: they learn on it, get good shots out of it, and eventually upgrade. That long, useful run is the case for it. The case against is the built-in grinder, the most criticised part, with retention, inconsistency and grind-range problems all reported, while units a few years old turn up in troubleshooting threads with pressure and flow faults.

Buying Verdict

Weak recommendation

Based on 36 evidence snippets · 5 positive · 31 critical

Buy the Breville Barista Pro as a machine to learn on and eventually outgrow, not as an endpoint. It is a good buy if you mostly make milk drinks, which is where the built-in grinder is described as adequate, and if you can budget for a separate grinder later, since that is the upgrade owners make first. If you are buying used, test extraction, steam and the buttons before paying, because second-hand units account for several of the faults reported here. Skip it if you regularly make drinks for guests one after another or want strong, fast steaming; inconsistency across several drinks and slow steam are among the reasons owners give for moving on, even though one long-term owner is happy with its steaming.

Evidence confidence: High. The grinder complaints come from ten independent threads covering retention, inconsistency, channelling, grind range and two grinder failures, set against two threads that find it adequate. Years of service as a first machine come from four threads, and pressure or flow faults from five threads plus two sudden taste changes whose causes were not reported. Steam is contested: five threads describe it as slow, weak or short of café texture and one five-year owner is very happy with it; the springing steam dial is one owner. Thirty-six rows in total, five of them positive; many critical rows are troubleshooting posts that report symptoms rather than confirmed causes.

Strengths and Common Complaints

The positive reports describe a machine that lasts as a first setup: years of good shots and a lot learned before an upgrade by choice.

The built-in grinder draws the most complaints, followed by pressure and flow faults on older units, steam that some owners find slow or short of café texture, and a steam dial that can spring back. • Total evidence snippets: 36 • Updated Oct 12, 2026

Strengths

  • Years of service as a first machine: Owners describe three to five years of use before upgrading: one is very happy after about five years, especially with its espresso quality and steaming; another says it served them well for more than three years; another learned a lot from it despite its limitations, even pushing it hard in a coffee trailer; and a fourth, using it since 2021, had it dialled in to great-tasting 1:2 shots at around 30 seconds. The upgrades in these threads are choices, not replacements after failure.
  • The built-in grinder can be enough, especially for milk drinks: Not every owner hits the grinder's limits. A long-term owner with a low inner-burr setting never ran short of fine adjustment, and an owner who also has a DF54 calls Breville's integrated grinders more than serviceable for milk drinks, with less fuss dialling in on the Barista Pro than on the DF54.

Common Complaints

  • The built-in grinder is the part owners outgrow: Retention and inconsistency are the specific complaints: the integrated grinder holds back more coffee, which complicates running more than one bag of beans, and inconsistent shots lead owners to shop for or buy a separate grinder first and a new machine later. One owner's shots channelled and sprayed whatever their puck prep until a dedicated Eureka grinder made a difference they call far from subtle.
  • Grind-range trouble at the fine end, and stalls with oily beans: A refurbished machine at the finest inner-burr setting and grind 1 to 3 still pulls some shots too fast with a week-old medium roast. On a new machine, settings near the ones recommended in online guides made the grinder stop producing coffee altogether, and dark, oily roasts lock up another owner's grinder.
  • Grinder breakdowns: After almost two years, one grinder began making a loud sound only with beans in, and cleaning the burrs following the advanced guide did not stop it. In another case a horrible grinding sound led to a warranty repair in which Breville replaced the grinder assembly and the showerhead seal.
  • Sudden extraction and pressure faults: Machines that had been working start misbehaving without a change in routine: almost no coffee after two years on the same beans and setting; pressure problems after three years; a pump that seems unable to build steady pressure, with nothing in the cup for 20-plus seconds; first drops after 20 seconds at any grind setting even though water passes an empty basket in 7; lukewarm shots, no steam and a pump that sounds like it is skipping on a machine owned since 2021. Two others report shots turning sour, or fast and watery after a descale. None of these posts reports a confirmed cause.
  • Steam: slow or weak for some owners, and a dial that can spring back: Steaming that 'takes forever' is one reason a three-year owner is upgrading, another accepted a somewhat weak steam wand as the price of convenience, an owner who moved to a prosumer machine expects to need time to get used to the new machine's steam power, and another, shopping for an upgrade, says its milk drinks come nowhere near the silky flat whites of a café. A five-year owner disagrees and is very happy with its steaming, so treat this as a matter of expectations rather than a defect. Separately, one owner's steam dial sometimes feels stiff and sometimes loose, springing back out of the steam position, although steam pressure and the hot-water setting work normally.

Who Should Buy Breville Barista Pro — and Who Should Avoid It

Fit depends on whether you want a first machine or a final one, and how many drinks you make at a time.

Best For

  • You want a first espresso machine you can learn on for several years.
  • Your drinks are mostly milk-based, where the built-in grinder is described as adequate.
  • You are ready to add a separate grinder when the built-in one holds you back.

Not For

  • You want an endpoint machine rather than a stepping stone.
  • You often make drinks for guests one after another.
  • You are buying a used unit you cannot test before paying.

I picked up a second hand Barista Pro having previously owned an Oracle. The first thing I’ve noticed is that flow doesn’t stop as soon as I stop the shot. … In my video you can see I stop the shot at 38g, but flow continues until 43g.

Complaint Shots suddenly turned sour despite an unchanged, documented workflow 2026-07-18

Suddenly EVERYTHING coming out sour [Breville Barista Pro] **Problem**: Despite maintaining a consistent and documented workflow, ALL espresso I've been making suddenly tastes sour. Inconsistent brews occur occasionally but *nothing* I've made since has tasted the same as before. I've been using the same bags of beans that are no more than a month old, so I doubt they ALL could have gone bad on the same day. **Primary beans:** Kirkland organic ethiopian - light roast **Secondary beans**: Medium roast Eth

Complaint Leaks from the rear while steaming, with inconsistent steam temperature 2026-07-15

Barista Pro leaking during steam cycle Hi All, I was recently generously gifted a used Breville Barista Pro from a friend. They had it for a while and hadn’t used it so it’s been sitting in storage. I’ve cleaned it up and it works very well still! The only real problem I’ve noticed is with steam cycles. 1) It seems to leak from the rear of the machine a little during steaming. Looks to be the bottom right (looking from the front of the machine). 2) I’m getting inconsistent temperatures from my steam cycles w

Complaint Built-in grinder holds the machine back 2026-07-01

Grinder recommendations [$500 budget] Certainly not a new request on here, but I have seen a lot of mixed reviews on different grinders. For context I have a Breville barista pro and have been using the built in grinder, but its not the best and my shots have been coming out inconsistently.

Complaint Cannot grind fine enough at the lowest setting 2026-06-27

I need some help dialing in my Breville/Sage Barista Pro The machine is brand new, bought in April this year in Denmark. Current settings: • Inner burr: 6 • External grind setting: I can't really go lower than 12 I watched several YouTube videos where people recommend an inner burr setting of 3 and an external grind setting around 5, but when I try anything close to that, nothing comes out of the grinder. The best shot I've managed so far was with: • Inner burr: 6 • Grind setting: 19 But now I'm wondering

Complaint Slightly watery espresso and a weak steam wand 2026-06-27

We had a Sage Barista Pro beforehand but she never touched it due to ‘all the faff'. I also got bored of the faff after about 6 months, and just accepted that the slightly watery espresso and somewhat weak steam wand was just the price for the convenience.

Complaint Built-in grinder turned loud after two years 2026-06-27

Loud sound with [Sage Grinder] I'm using the Sage Barista Pro. I've been using this machine for almost 2 years without a problem. However, now there's a loud sound when I use the grinder with beans in. If I take the beans out, the grinder seems to work fine so I'm confused what the issue is. I've followed the advanced cleaning guide to take out and clean all the burrs but still the same issue. Any suggestions would be appreciated! Complaint Coffee does not come out hot enough 2026-06-27

Poor extraction help [Sage Barista Pro] Had a Sage Barista Pro for 3 years now. I currently have the machine's setting on maximum heat for the coffee extraction, but the liquid doesn't even come out fully hot. It comes out mild at best, and it has always been this way. As you can see in the photos, it looks completely pale and watered down. My partner is British and insists that this is completely normal. "It's that because these beans are light roast, they are supposed to be very, very fruity with absolutely no

Buying Questions About Breville Barista Pro

Quick answers to the main review, complaints, buyer-fit, and comparison questions shoppers ask before choosing Breville Barista Pro.

Does the Breville Barista Pro heat up quickly?

The machine itself, yes: a five-year owner singles out its incredibly fast heat-up. Getting the whole brew path hot is another matter: one owner runs about five blank shots to bring the portafilter up to temperature, and another, with the temperature setting at maximum, says the coffee has never come out fully hot. If very hot espresso matters to you, budget time for warming shots.

Is the Breville Barista Pro good for making several drinks in a row?

It is weaker there. An owner who makes new drinks for friends and family finds it gets the job done but is too inconsistent when making several, and an owner who moved to a dual boiler describes very even back-to-back shots after having consistency issues with the Pro. It is a machine for one or two drinks at a time rather than for hosting.

What should I check on a used Breville Barista Pro?

Several of the faults here come from second-hand machines: a leak from the rear during steaming with inconsistent steam temperatures, a filter-size button that stopped registering, and flow that keeps running from 38 g to 43 g after the shot is stopped. Before paying, pull a shot, steam a jug of milk and press every button. A machine owned for a year also needed a leaking elbow connector replaced and has a flowmeter that collects air bubbles, so repairs are not limited to used units.

Should I buy a Barista Pro or a Bambino with a separate grinder?

One piece of advice favours the Bambino route. Told that a shopper already owned a Bambino and had a new Barista Pro in its box, a commenter recommended selling the Barista Pro and putting the money into a better grinder for the Bambino, calling the Pro a side-grade at best. That is one opinion, but it follows the same logic as the grinder upgrades owners make: the built-in grinder is usually the first thing replaced.
